FAQs about therapy with Jaclyn & Insurance

  • If you think working together would be a good fit for you, please email me at jaclyntannercounseling@gmail.com or send me a message through the Contact page to set up your initial consultation. I offer a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation with me to learn more about your hopes for therapy and to see if we are the right fit!

From there, we will set up an intake appointment where we will go over therapy goals and procedures, intake paperwork, get to know one another better, and discuss your goals for therapy.

  • I offer both in person and fully virtual sessions, and you may access both in our work together. Traditionally, psychoanalysis is in-person, and we can have a conversation about what will be the best therapeutic experience would be for you. My office is located at 40 Main Street, Suite 14 in Torrington, CT.

  • Therapy is an investment toward the life you want to live. You can expect to pay $200 for a 50 minute session with me. You may pay privately or utilize your health insurance benefits.

  • I accept all major credit cards, cash, checks, HSA cards, and Venmo.

  • I am in network with the following insurance companies:

    Aetna

    Oscar Health
    Oxford
    Surest Health Plans

  • If you have out-of-network coverage for mental health services, you may be eligible for reimbursement for some, or all, of the cost of your sessions. I am able to provide superbills (i.e. itemized receipts) for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many insurance companies provide out-of-network coverage to offset the costs of therapy (typically between 50-100% of the cost may be covered).

To find out if you have out-of-network benefits for mental health, it is in your best interest to check your coverage carefully by asking your provider the following questions:

    1. Does my plan include out-of-network benefits for mental health care?

    2. What percentage of the cost of therapy will be reimbursed?

    3. Is approval required from my primary care doctor?

    4. What is my "co-insurance?"

    5. Do I have a deductible for out-of-network mental health services? If yes, what is the remaining amount I will have to pay before my health plan starts to reimburse me for fees that I pay out-of-pocket?

    6. How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • Primarily, privacy.

Paying out-of-pocket offers several advantages, especially the benefit of privacy. Insurance companies typically require extensive documentation from therapists for payment, which may potentially jeopardize confidentiality (for example when applying for life insurance or to work in certain careers that require extensive medical background checks).

In addition to privacy-related concerns, insurance companies often require a “medical necessity,” requiring a DSM-V diagnosis for covered care. While exploring a diagnosis can be beneficial for certain individuals in a healing journey, it is not necessary to pathologize your experience to access therapy as a support.

For those valuing increased privacy and treatment flexibility, paying out-of-pocket may be a more suitable option.
